Brief introduction R.L. Burnside was born in the rural part of Lafayette County, Mississippi. He spent most of his life working as a sharecropper and fisherman. He was first inspired to play guitar after hearing John Lee Hooker play. He learned music from neighbor Mississippi Fred McDowell, and was also influenced by his cousin-in-law, Muddy Waters. In 1992, Burnside released his first album on Fat Possum Records, then became widely known in the 1990s. He had a powerful, expressive voice and played both electric and acoustic guitars. His drone-based style was a characteristic of North Mississippi hill country blues rather than Mississippi Delta blues. He called his music “Burnside style” and often commented that his backing musicians needed to be familiar with his style in order to be able to play along with him. Burnside's music had a rough, obstinate energy that also appealed to contemporary rock musicians and fans. |
