Brief introduction

Usually billed as his stage name Mississippi Fred McDowell. He was one of the most vibrant performers of the 1960s blues revival.

Fred McDowell was actually born and raised in Rossville, Tennessee. He learned to fret his guitar strings with a bottleneck or metal slide after seeing his father’s cousin play with a steak bone. Sometimes he is considered the first north hill country blues artist who produced a version of the blues somewhat closer in structure to its African roots.
