Adapted from the Tolstoy's novel The Divine and the Human.

In late 19th-century Europe, there were enough different varietyies of Anarchism, socialism and  anarcho-socialism. Giulio Manieri, an aristocrat by birth, is the impassioned leader of an anarchist movement in Italy. He attempts to get a revolution going in a small provincial town. But the people are apathetic. Captured and condemned,  Manieri firmly believes in his political convictions while struggling against madness in the loneliness of his prison cell. After 10-year solitary confinement he is transferred to group imprisonment and finally meets contemporary political prisoners, they have nothing but disdain for his beliefs. The next generation has traded in revolutionary extremism for a more pragmatic approach.  Feeling he has wasted ten years of his life, Manieri finds himself unable to function in the new outside world.

19世纪晚期的欧洲，无政府主义、社会主义和工会组织主义正呈现千差万别的景象。贵族出身的Giulio Manieri是当时意大利无政府主义的一个充满激情的领袖。他试图在一个小市镇上发动一次革命，但是人们表现得很冷漠。Manieri获罪入狱。在牢房中他一边与精神错乱和孤独寂寞做斗争，一边始终坚持着自己的政治信念。十年的单独监禁结束后他被送往集体牢房，在路上他遇到了一些当时被捕的政治犯，他们对他的信仰却持鄙视的态度。下一代人已经放弃极端的革命转而采取更实际的策略。Manieri感到十年的时间全都浪费了，他发现自己已经无法在新的世界中发挥作用。
