The story begins in 1919 with Greek refugees fleeing Odessa and the invading Red Army for their homeland. As they arrive somewhere near Thessaloniki and build a small village near a river, where the forbidden love affair between the beautiful young Eleni and Alexis begins.

Eleni is an orphan and she is also taken care by Alexis' family. Although the pair have grown up together, their love goes against the wishes of Alexis' father, who sees in Eleni a suitable wife for himself. Eloping from their village, the young couple go to Thessaloniki where Alexis makes a living as an accordion player, resulting in twin babies, Yannis and Yorgis. They roam around Greece, but their efforts to preserve their love are thwarted by social, political and historical events as World War 2 and the Greek Civil War. Alexis emigrates to the USA, the couple's sons fight on opposing sides. Eleni's life follows the course set by her country's ancient heroes - the struggle of the Seven against Thebes.

Passion and pain, transgression and vengeance, exile and loss, oppression and resistance, loyalty and betrayal. Angelopoulos' epic is a magnificent, visually stunning reflection on the turbulent history of Greece in the 20th Century.
