Though it contains 155 films made by directors working in the United States and abroad from the invention of cinema until World War II, this collection is incomplete. Because we can't find any work by Maya Deren or Stan Brakhage.

Many of the films have not been available since their creation over a century ago. Finding new techniques and styles, these diretors directly influenced later American filmmaking, both experimental and mainstream.
