Brief introduction

Hildegard von Bingen was a German monastic leader, mystic, author, and composer of music.

Born to a noble family, she was convent-educated from the age of seven by Benedictine nuns near Bingen. At age 43 she became abbess of her community. Hildegard's philosophy comes from visionary mysticism—she felt she received a prophetic call from God in 1146. She collected her visions into three books.

Hildegard von Bingen is the first composer whose biography is known. She wrote more than seventy-two songs, including a morality play. Her musical works have survived close to a thousand years and are still studied today.
