Brief introduction The group was formed in San Jose, CA and took its name from the 1998 Joan Chen-directed film Xiu Xiu: The Sent Down Girl. Xiu Xiu's mantra is that life is hard. Deeply influenced by modern classical, improvisation, British pop and post-punk, techno beats, and the gamelan orchestra, their music is painfully autobiographical, morose, and histrionic. The works always feature the collisions of Gamelan, post-punk synth lines, programmed beats, traditional rock instrumentation, and of course, Stewart's hair-raising tenor. |
