Psychedelic Chants Mazzy Star |
Brief introduction Although Mazzy Star was nominally a full band, they were basically the core duo of guitarist David Roback and singer Hope Sandoval with backing musicians. Mazzy Star began performing live on the underground music scene in the late 1980's. Despite the critical success of their first album and their rapidly growing cult following, Mazzy Star has remained a somewhat enigmatic presence on the contemporary music scene. The 1993 release of their second album So Tonight That I Might See, on Capitol Records, further reflected their diverse and experimental musical styles, both electric and acoustic. Mazzy Star much prefered the dark side of psychedelia, as exemplified by the most distended tracks of the Doors and the Velvet Underground. Fuzzy guitar workouts, with plaintive folky compositions. If psychedelic music had a voice in '90s post-punk, Mazzy Star may have been its strongest reincarnation.
