Brief introduction

Initially named Sahara Dust, Epica was formed by Mark Jansen, the former guitarist of After Forever who left that band in 2002. Mark Jansen and his fellow musicians harbor a great interest in other cultures. The varied sound of Epica reflects all that. The band also works with a classically trained choir.

Epica is a band that is fond of contrasts. Solid guitars versus flawless choral singing and strings. The sublime singing of Simone Simons versus the excruciating grunts of Mark Jansen. The music features wonderfully flawless soprano vocals, and rich, majestic classically-influenced symphonic gothic metal.
