Smells like GRUNGE is in the AIR ia_young
Nirvana¡¯s second album, Nevermind, the one that really made them is probably one of the best albums ever. The staying power of Nirvana is amazing, nearly seven years since Nirvana broke up, due to the untimely death of Kurt Cobain, and you still see people walking around with Nirvana t-shirts and hoodies. Released in 1991, Nirvana is the band, which is supposed to have started the so-called Grunge genre of music. This was meant to be a mix of punk and metal combined with meaningful songs, which meant a lot to the band and the people who wrote them. Since their debut album, which was released in 1989 there were a few changes to the line up and peoples names. Kurt Cobain changed his name from Kurdt Kobain to the aforementioned and the drummer and of guitar player was dropped and Dave Grohl (now of the Foo Fighters) was recruited to play drums. ** The Inlay ** This is kind of a plain cover, it has the instantly recognisable baby in water with a dollar on a fishing hook. Inside the cover are some of the lyrics from the songs, but these have been order so that they appears as a kind of story. Try reading this, it does your head in! It is cleaver the way that they did that. Here is a review of the songs on the album, in track order: * Smells Like Teen Spirit * This is the first track on the album and is the one which if you mention Nirvana everyone thinks of this song. The reason for is that I think this is the single that I think did the best in the charts, and the video, which got played over and over again on MTV. This is a medium paced punk metal song, which is about teenagers, and the reason why they rebel is because they just want to be entertained. The name for the album comes from the lyrics of this song. * In Bloom * The second song on the album, this song is about flowers in bloom. I think it has a rather darker theme to it. To me it seems that this guy is looking at kids, but he is not sure why and he needs help. * Come As You Are * This is the thirds track on the CD and this song is about friends. The whole song is a contradiction of itself with lines such as ¡°¡take your time, hurry up, the choice is yours don¡¯t be late¡¡±. This is quite a mellow song and is one of my favourite on the album. * Breed * This is the fourth song on the album and is more of a metal track. This song is about a couple and all that entails. It doesn¡¯t say this directly but uses some cleaver lyrics to say this. My favourite line from the song is ¡°..we can plant a house, we can build a tree¡¡±. * Lithium * The fifth song on the album and yet again we have a song which is a nearly mellow, but then breaks into a more metal style and back again. This is a song about friends and how when this guy lost them he turned to god, I think? * Polly * This is the sixth song on the album and is probably the other song which everyone knows. This is a very mellow song, but there are other versions of it which are a lot heavier. This song is about a bird, polly, trapped in a cage and how it hurts being trapped in there. But then is this song about a girl who is trapped and the references to birds are about the girl? I don¡¯t know? * Territorial Pissings * This is the seventh song on the album and is more of a punk style song. This song is about getting drunk and stoned and how when this person does I wouldn¡¯t get in the way. This is a very fast paced song, which I like a lot. * Drain You * This is the eighth song on the album and is a mix between punk and metal. This song seems to be about drugs and how they drain all of your energy. This song also has one of the most weel known Nirvana lyrics, ¡°One baby to another said I¡¯m lucky I met you¡¡±. * Lounge Act * This is the ninth song on this album and its style is a mellow punk sound, if there is such a thing? This song appears to be about this guy trying to impress this girl. But when he gets her she doesn¡¯t know anything about him because he had to lie to get her. * Stay Away * This is the tenth song on the album and has a very punk feel to it. This song is about, well staying away! I can¡¯t actually tell what this is about as the lyrics are quite hard to hear, apart from ¡°Stay Away¡±. * On A Plain * This is the eleventh song on the album, which is a mellow rock song. This is about doing drugs, knowing that it is wrong but there seems to be nothing that can be done as it feels so good, but then other times so bad. * Something In The Way * This is the twelfth and last song on this album and this is the ultimate in mellow songs. It appears to be about people attitude toward animals, although I am blatantly wrong. There is probably some other meaning to the word in the song. ** My Thoughts ** This is one of the best albums ever made and everyone that I know who is into this sort of music has this album. Even my friends not really into this music have Nirvana or know them. For me this is a must have album, which has hardly aged at all in the ten years since it¡¯s release. Could you say that about any of the pop acts today, who¡¯s songs seem out of date only a year later?
