Brief introduction Paul Butterfield was the first white harmonica player. Before he came to prominence, white American musicians treated the blues with cautious respect. His storming sound was a major catalyst in bringing electric Chicago blues to white audiences. Furthermore, he brought the music to a generation of rock fans during the 1960s. Paul Butterfield began playing classical flute as a child. His father, a lawyer, and mother, a painter, encouraged Butterfield's musical studies from a young age. He crafted his own style-unlike the older players and his phrases were often more drawn out than those of the Southside bluesmen. When Bob Dylan witnessed the performance of Paul Butterfield and his friends well-received at an urban blues workshop, he recruited Butterfield's band to back him for part of his own set. In 1969 Paul Butterfield played at Woodstock. By the 1980s he was plagued with health problems. On May 4, 1987 he was found dead in his Los Angeles home at the age of 44, a victim of drug overdose. |
