The film is set in the colorful landscapes of contemporary Spain and features several actors who have previously cooperated with Jarmusch.
A mysterious loner is on an unspecified mission through Spain. His objectives are not initially divulged. He receives cryptic directions continuously by means of exchanging matchboxes with various unusual strangers.
He travels from Madrid to Seville. The journey takes him also through his own consciousness.
