The second film of Douglas' autobiographical trilogy.

Jamie is a 9-year-old English boy who lives with his maternal grandmother in a poor mining village. After she dies, he is sent to his paternal grandmother. Jamie and his brother wait, and hope for someone to raise them. Their mother is alive, but she’s not able to be a mother. Their father gives them each a different avenue to pursue, but the father has mother issues of his own. Jamie feels alone in an unsympathetic world, subject to both psychological and physical brutality.

The boy eventually ends up in an orphanage.

The very first two shots, which come from a movie within the movie, are the only two color shots in the entire trilogy.
