Estonian castle

The film is faithful to the architecture of the play and the imagery is dominated by elements of nature. Many of the exteriors were filmed at a fortress on the border of Russia and Estonia. With its shadow falling across the surging waters of the sea, the castle's role as a prison is emphasised.

The different accentuations and sounds provide a new perspective in the spectator’s appreciation of the text. Dmitri Shostakovich then counterpoints with his modernist score.

电影忠于原剧的体系结构，而意象则交由自然元素支配。很多室外场景在俄罗斯和爱沙尼亚交界处的一座要塞里拍摄。城堡的影子落在汹涌起伏的海水上，更衬托出它的牢笼象征。

不同以往的声音语调给观众的欣赏带来新鲜感觉，德米特里·肖斯塔科维奇的现代主义配乐也与之呼应。
