Partially written by renowned poet Yevgeny Yevtushenko and shot by cinematographer Sergei Urusevsky, this sensual four-chaptered epic of injustices exposed in Batista’s dictatorial Cuba examines the various problems caused by political oppression as well as by great discrepancies in wealth and power.

A young woman in a nightclub who lives in a derelict slum in Havana takes a customer to her shack for a night for pay, but found out by her suitor; A sugarcane farmer burns his fields in frustration because his crop has been sold to United Fruit by force; A middle-class student ponders the use of violence as means of resistance, then battles the police with his schoolmates and pays a high price for their rebellion; A unconcerned peasant living in the mountains quickly turns to rebel fighters when Batista bombers strafe his land.

These four episodes are narrated by a woman who identifies herself as Cuba. Though not received well by either the Soviet Union or Cuban public and buried in the Russian archives for almost 30 years, the film’s elaborately conceived and painstakingly choreographed camera set-ups and exhilarating camera movements are without parallel in film history.

四个章节都伴随着一个女性的画外音，她自称名叫古巴。虽然电影无论在苏联还是在古巴都不被接受，并因此被埋没了近30年，但它精心构思的镜头安排以及令人血脉喷张的镜头运动在电影史上都无出其右。
