Irene, a wealthy American living in Rome, returns home to get ready for the dinner party. Her son Michael summons her to his room several times but Irene doesn't pay attention to him. Then Michael hurls himself from his bedroom window.

Searching for some meaning in the chaotic, postwar world after the death of her son, Irene takes the advice of a leftist friend, and begins working with the ill and destitute of Rome. She finds comfort in doing good deeds and strives to help those she can.

Her conservative husband finds Irene's charitable activities distasteful. He thinks she is mentally ill. The doctors even go so far as to call her acts of good will communistic. She is about to be locked away in her little cell.
