The story is about two brothers growing up in a small town south of Rome during the 1960s and 1970s. Their father works in the factory and their mother waits for the promised housing.

Manrico, the elder, is a charismatic firebrand who becomes the prime mover in the local Communist party. Accio, the younger, also wants to change the world but in completely different ways. He finds his own direction by joining the fascist movement. The rift between the brothers is further intensified when Accio realizes that he loves his brother's girlfriend Francesca. Over the next years, these three experience family, love, politics, and separations. Gradually they come to a firmer and clearer understanding of not only the differences but the similarities among them.

故事的主角是1960到1970年代在罗马以南的一个小镇上长大成人的两兄弟。他们的父亲在工厂上班，母亲则在等待着分配住房。

哥哥Manrico是一个颇具魅力的煽动者，他成了当地的共产主义活跃分子。弟弟Accio也想改变世界，不过是以完全不同的方式进行。他投身于法西斯运动中。而当Accio意识到自己爱上哥哥的女友Francesca后兄弟俩之间的裂痕就更加深了。在此后的岁月里，三个人一同体味了家庭、爱情、政治和离别的味道。他们渐渐地对不仅仅是分歧还包括他们之间的共同之处有了更深刻明晰的理解。
