This is the first of Tarr's collaborations with novelist Laszlo Krasznahorkai that brought about a maturity, and a more profound philosophical and artistic depth to his work. Tarr adopts a formally rigorous style, featuring long takes and slow tracking shots of the bleak landscape that surrounds the characters. The film has a universal quality in its thematic concerns of alienation, and of spiritual, moral, and physical decay.

It's set in a mining town where persistent fogs seep into lost souls. There lives Karrer, a listless and brooding man who has almost completely withdrawn from the world but for an obsession for a married singer in the bar that he frequents. Unable to find a way to create a relationship with her Karrer eventually decides to offer a smuggling work to the singer's husband. It sends him away from home for a few days. But Karrer's plan backfires, he is rejected by the singer. Afterwards, one betrayal falls upon another, leaving Karrer in despair, alienated from all of humanity. He turns everyone in to the police.
