Based on Heinrich Böll's Nobel Prize-winning novel. A shy housekeeper Katharina has a one-night-stand with a handsome stranger she meets at a party. When the police arrest her on suspicion of harboring a terrorist, her quiet, ordered life into ruins. Katharina is brutally interrogated. She is subject to a vicious smear campaign by the police and a ruthless tabloid journalist, testing the limits of her dignity and her sanity. As a result, Katharina loses her job, her friends, and her standing in the community. After being branded a Communist by the insensitive press, Katharina goes over the top and shoots a reporter: at last, she has truly become what the media has made of her.
