Lucien Ginsburg was born to Russian-Jewish parents in Nazi-occupied Paris. He was a painter and jazz musician in his early years. After the war, he adopts the stage name Serge Gainsbourg and becomes a wildly popular superstar. Along the way he has affairs with some of the era's most beautiful women, including Juliette Greco, Brigitte Bardot and Jane Birkin. Gainsbourg is as famous for his decadent life, as for his clever lyrics and musical genius.
The film is adapted from the director's own graphic novel.
