This is novelist Emmanuel Carrère's debut feature.

Architect Marc has had a moustache for a long time. He takes it into his head to speculate on just how much he is identified via the moustache. So he impulsively shaves the moustache off. A tragic odyssey begins that leads Marc to question every relationship in his life, and even his own identity.

Marc's wife Agnès returns home and does not utter one single word. She seems not to notice the major physical change in Marc's face. Not only does Agnès not notice the difference but neither do their friends and his colleagues at work. More than that, when Marc finally points it out, they all claim he never had a moustache. Overhearing talk of being sent to a mental institute, he flees to Hong Kong where he finds time to ponder this unusual predicament.
