Mouchette was based on a novel by Georges Bernanos, the same writer responsible for the source of Bresson's best-known film, Diary of a Country Priest. The title character is a 14-year-old girl, weighed down by a lonely existence, an alcoholic father, and a dying mother. Seeking escape, Mouchette becomes attracted to an inebriated poacher, who takes advantage of her vulnerability by raping her, ultimately leading to tragic consequences.
