Inspired by the novel Jakob von Gunten by Robert Walser, it's the Quay Brothers' first live-action feature film.

Jakob enters a school, run by Johannes Benjamenta and his sorrowful sister Lisa, which trains servants. The all-male student body submits to unorthodox rituals and choreographed lessons designed to reduce them to “absolute zero.” Jakob finds the school to be an oppressive environment. Unexpectedly his presence arouses carnal desires in Lisa. Jakob is also drawn to her. After Lisa shows him the secret labyrinth below the school, Jakob gradually uncovers the mystical Institute's secrets. Lisa soon dies and the institute closes. Johannes and Jakob then leave together.

The film is an anti-fairytale as unique and astonishing as the Quay Brothers'  celebrated animations.

电影原型是Robert Walser的小说Jakob von Gunten，它是奎氏兄弟的第一部真人表演电影作品。
