Protagonist Guy Maddin returns to remote Black Notch island, where he grew up alongside an orphanage run by his parents, to paint the lighthouse to appease his mother. Memories of strange events there overpower him.

Guy Maddin’s mad, imaginary childhood is a nightmare under the hyper-watchful eye of his crazed mother restoring her youth like hell and a diabolically distant scientist-father. Exploring the orphanage Guy unearths a world of disturbing science experiments and devilish schemes.

The film consists of twelve labeled chapters, and is narrated by Isabella Rossellini.
