This film was reputedly the very
first film of the “Cinema Marginal” in Brazil, and the one that was
responsible for its name. The Marginal Cinema was a sort of film to
represent the life of the society’s forgotten people.
In a slum on the banks of
the Tietê River in São Paulo, prostitutes, a pimp, a retarded
man, a handicap, people in the margin of the society live their
ordinary hopeless lives without any expectation. Some people are
going through tragic love affairs. A black woman is in a courtship
with an unemployed white man while an obsessive guy chasing after a
blond girl. They join themselves in the boat of hell.
Truck-driver turned director
Candeias narrated a story that walks the line between the
naturalistic and the symbolic, without chronology, full of ellipsis,
very few dialogs and bizarre characters and situations. |
