Three Gorges Dam on the Yangtze River, one of the biggest and most controversial engineering projects in the world, has forced millions of common people out of their ancestral homes and will destroy numerous cultural and archaeological sites. Following two young people who are transformed by the construction, the director Yung Chang examines the effects of this massive project on personal lives.

On a Cruises a young girl Yu Shui trains as a dishwasher. She would much rather be in school, but financial circumstances force her to support her peasant family. However, the job is also her sole hope of someday being able to afford a higher education. Meanwhile, another young people Chen Bo Yu who working as a bartender plies his charm looks and English skills for extra tips. He blends easily with the middle-class foreign customers. It seems that he has a more prosperous future.

长江三峡大坝是世界上最宏大和最有争议的建设工程，它使成千上万的普通百姓被迫离开祖祖辈辈生活的家乡，还会令一些文化遗址和古迹从此消失。导演张侨勇跟随着被改变命运的两个年轻人，审视了这一巨大建设项目对个人生活的影响。

在一艘游轮上，年轻女孩余水被培训成一名洗碗工。她很想读书，但家里经济窘迫，她只能赚钱供养父母。不过这份工作也是她获得再教育的唯一希望。同时，另一个年轻人陈波宇获得了酒保的工作，他凭借出色的外表和英语交流能力赚取着小费。他很容易就跟外国的中产阶级游客打成了一片，似乎他的将来会更光明些。
