Written when he was just 17 years old and directed when he was 20, Xavier Dolan’s directing debut is a semi-autobiographical tale.

Dolan himself plays a cool and composed teenager Hubert who haughtily regards his mother with contempt. He bickers constantly with her about every trivial thing, for instance, her tacky sweaters, kitsch decorations and table manners. When his teacher asks the class to write about their mother, Hubert can't imagine he has one so he writes that his mother is dead.

Hubert is confused and torn by a love-hate relationship that obsesses him more and more each day. When his mother finally sends him off to a boarding school, their relationship appears irreversibly damaged.
