It is an adaptation of a novel by Clarice Lispector with the same name and also Suzana Amaral's acclaimed debut feature.
Macabea, a 19-years-old typist, has left her home in northeastern Brazil to seek her fortune in Sao Paulo. Harsh urban reality grinds provincial innocence to dust, but Macabea still keeps on searching for romance and fulfillment. Then she meets Olimpico, her northeast fellow-villager, who has dreams of becoming a Congressman. However the man can not bring her good luck.
