Based on a novel with the same name by Graciliano Ramos. A poor kid Paulo Honório originally serves as a peddler. He grows an ambition that to take the farm from the hands of its inept owner, and it's realized. He begins to be tortured by the isolation that stems from economic success. Moreover, obsessed by his desire to get even richer, he doesn't pay much attention to his wife, a teacher who reacts against his tyrannical ways.
