Akerman made this brilliant film when she was only 25 and it became one of the most important films of the 1970s as well as a classic of both feminist and experimental filmmaking.

Set mostly in an one-bedroom apartment, it covers three days in the life of a bourgeois middle-aged widow. She boils potatoes, does the marketing, shines shoes, wipes out the tub, knits a sweater for her son, and, also prostitutes herself to a male client every afternoon for her and her son's subsistence. All of their activities are rote and uneventful. In the same measure most takes are drawn-out and wordless.

But the mundane life unravels after Jeanne unexpectedly has an orgasm with her client.
