David P. Calleo is Dean Acheson Professor and Director of
European Studies at the Paul Nitze School of Advanced International
Studies at The Johns Hopkins University. He is the author of many books
and articles, including The Bankrupting of America: How the Federal
Deficit Is Impoverishing the Nation, Beyond American Hegemony: The Future
of the Western Alliance, and The German Problem Reconsidered: Germany in
the World System, 1870 to the Present.

地缘政治和地缘经济是本书最主要的着眼点。从这些角度出发，作者发表了一系列自己的观点。他认为欧洲的一体化得益于冷战期间的外部力量，来自苏联的威胁和来自美国的挑战是当时欧洲面临的主要问题。而今世界格局发生了重大变化，法德引擎如何运作，如何实现新的泛欧洲空间，还有亚洲崛起后构建怎样的欧亚关系等等，书中都做了详尽分析。自然还讲到了俄罗斯及中国对欧亚及欧美关系的影响等。
我们可以从中看到作者对美国单极主义的担忧，以及对欧洲主导的多元主义的赞赏。
