Synopsis
Discussing the work of the great
historians of the 19th century, Jacob Burkhardt, Benedetto Croce, G. W.
F Hegel, Jules Michelet, Friedrich Nietzsche, and Leopold von Ranke, the
book argues that beyond the surface level of the historical text, there
is a deep structural, or latent, content that is generally poetic and
specifically linguistic in nature.
About Hayden White
Born: Jul. 12, 1928
An American historian in the
tradition of literary criticism. He is best known for his
post-structuralist approach and his emphasis on the importance of tropes
in historiography. He has argued that historical writing is influenced
by literary writing in many ways, sharing the strong reliance on
narrative for meaning, therefore eliminating the possibility of
objective or truly scientific history. Hayden White is also a member of
the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
