their brainchild called the “selectorate” theory. They shows that our
belief that there is a great difference between tyrants and democratic
“representatives” is just a convenient fiction, all kinds of rulers aim
at their own survival, not “the public good.”

About the authors
Bruce Bueno de Mesquita
(born Nov. 24, 1946) is the Julius Silver Professor of Politics and
Director of the Alexander Hamilton Center for Political Economy at
New York University and a Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution at
Stanford University. He specializes in international relations,
foreign policy, and nation building. He has built an intricate
computer model that can predict the outcomes of international
conflicts with bewildering accuracy.
Alastair M. Smith is also a
Professor of Politics at New York University. He earned his doctoral
degree at University of Rochester in 1995.
